Research on ASQ and ASQ:SE

ASQ is backed by nearly 30 years of research, and both ASQ and ASQ:SE are highly reliable, valid, and accurate screening tools. Research on ASQ and ASQ:SE is extensive and ongoing.

The validity of Ages & Stages Questionnaires® (ASQ) and the Ages & Stages Questionnaires®: Social-Emotional (ASQ:SE) has been studied extensively. Psychometric studies based on normative samples of more than 8,000 questionnaires for ASQ and more than 3,000 questionnaires for ASQ:SE show high reliability of both instruments (> 90%), internal consistency, sensitivity, and specificity.

Current Research

Thousands of families have completed ASQ and ASQ:SE questionnaires, and innumerable professionals using the questionnaires have provided valuable feedback to the tools' developers at the Early Intervention Program at the University of Oregon.

The developers are currently conducting a renorming project study of ASQ to verify that the current scoring system and norms accurately reflect the abilities of today's young children. Families with children who have not been assessed as having a delay or disability and who wish to participate in the project can complete ASQ questionnaires online at http://asq.uoregon.edu.

In addition, the developers of ASQ and ASQ:SE are always pleased to receive blind data to help further their research and the development of future editions. If your program has collected data on ASQ or ASQ:SE and would like to share it, e-mail rights@brookespublishing.com. Please include your data and complete contact information, which will be shared only with the authors and not used by Brookes Publishing or any other party.

Jane Squires, one of ASQ and ASQ:SE's lead developers, talks about how ASQ continues to be studied across the United States and in many countries abroad in A Practical Tool for Monitoring Development in Young Children.
